This past saturday held New Jersey's 4th annual Garden State Brewfest at Anchor Golf Center, which doubled as a fundraiser to benefit the Whippany Fire Company's new firehouse. We all gathered to drink for a good time and a better cause! The beer tents were divided into Local, National, Oktoberfest and VIP. I arrived around 12:30 to Garden State Brewfest with Jesse of Poor Henry's and a few other volunteers, where we manned the Founder's tent, serving Red's Rye P.A. and All Day IPA.
The fest, boasting over 200 brews, was filled with our favorite locals like Carton, Bolero Snort, and Clown Shoes; our neighbors like Troegs, Freewill, and Saucony; and our not so local friends like Breckenridge, Great Lakes and Oskar Blues. Whichever brewery you choose, it's always great when they break out something special for a festival. Here were a few notable brews:
Carton's Irish Coffee- As I've mentioned in past posts, this stuff is crack in a glass. Deep golden color, peppermint aroma. Peppermint coffee taste, alcohol masked extremely well. I could drink this all day. In fact, I did! But their IDIPA was another solid beer that they had at the festival, one of my Carton favorites.
Bolero Snort's Dry Bacon-ed Variable 002 Smoked Brown with Coffee on cask - So you may have had Bolero's Variabull Batch 002. If you haven't, you're missing out. The rich, coffee in the original smoked brown comes out towards the end. But only after a full taste of maple-y bacon-y breakfast-y goodness. Who needs breakfast anymore? Maple bacon coffee beer will do just fine ;)
Freewill's Grape Sour- Anyone who knows me knows I'm a sucker for a good pucker. This was fantastic. Unfortunately, I only had a small pour because there wasn't much left. But this sour was a perfect balance of grape sweetness and puckering sour. I'll be searching for this again to have a better taste and write a more detailed review. It's been haunting me in my dreams. I'm not kidding you. Last night, I had a dream that I found 6 bottles of it...
All in all, I would say this was another successful GSBF. A good time, in good company.
Check back for my next post! Until then, hoppy drinking!
